INTACH-SATTE Awards Presented
Last year, SATTE forged a strategic partnership
with INTACH, the premier NGO that has made
sterling contribution to the cause of art,
heritage and culture, to honour people and
projects that have contributed to heritage and
preservation of our culture, so far as travel and
tourism is concerned. In the first year, four
eminent personalities were conferred the award.
This year, the SATTE-INTACH awards went to Maharaj
Gaj Singh of Jodhpur, Maharana Arvind Singh of
Mewar and Dilip Thakkar of Balaram Palace Resort.
Maharana Arvind Singh of Mewar’s illustrious
contribution to the perservation and conservation
of heritage tourism are known the world over. His
chain of hotels, under the banner of HRH Group,
spread across the entire length and breadth of
Rajasthan are a living testimony of the grandeur
of yesteryear’s royalty, painstakingly preserved
and maintained through professional management and
innovative practices. Some of the HRH hotels are
icons of heritage hotels.
Maharaja Gaj Singhji’s major thrust has been in
the area of tourism. The conversion of his own
palace and fort into a hotel and museum apart, he
has provided leadership to the innovative movement
of Heritage Hotels in Rajasthan and the
neighbouring States, that is making a great impact
on Tourism & Conservation in India.
When Balaram Palace Resort was acquired by the
Gopi group in 1993, a family-owned business
concern that has been successfully running Gopi
restaurant, the flagship of the group, in
Ahmedabad, it was in a shambles. All the members
of the group, spearheaded by Dilip Thakkar, the
managing director, put the palace back in shape by
revamping and refurbishing the palace in a manner
that its majesty was restored to the former glory
it was known for.
